Shira Route: scenic, but a harder start

Want a quieter, scenic and slightly adventurous way to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro? The Shira Route is worth a look. Most people choose its better-known neighbour, the Lemosho Route, and the two are much alike. The difference is the start: Shira begins high, skips the rainforest and puts you straight into the alpine meadows.

That gives you big views from the first hour. It also gives your body less time to adjust in the first days. So is the Shira Route a good choice for you? Here is what you need to know before you take this high road to the Roof of Africa.

What is the Shira Route?

The Shira Route starts on the western side of Kilimanjaro. After the first day or two it follows much the same trail as the Lemosho Route. What sets Shira apart, and makes it harder, is the starting height: you drive right up to the Shira Gate and start walking at around 3,600 meters.

Key Shira Route Facts:

  • Trail type: western approach, joins Lemosho and Machame

  • Distance: ~58 km (36 miles)

  • Duration: 7 to 8 days

  • Start altitude: ~3,600 meters (vs. 2,100m for Lemosho)

  • Success rate: ~85% (higher on the 8-day itinerary)
