Kilimanjaro National Park Overview
Mount Kilimanjaro is a dormant volcano that rises to 5,895 meters. It towers over the flat savanna around it, and on a clear day you can see it from far away. You can see it from neighbouring Kenya too, but the mountain itself lies entirely inside Tanzania. Climbers come from all over the world to reach its summit. The big draw is that you don’t need technical climbing skills to get to the top. It is a hard trek, and the views make it worth the effort.
Thinking about the climb? Tanzania Tourism Safaris can guide you, with experienced crews and support from the first day to the last. For many people, standing on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the best things they ever do, and it is something you can only do in Tanzania.
Geographical location: Northern Tanzania
Highest point: 5,895 meters (19,341 feet)
Things to Do in Kilimanjaro National Park
Kilimanjaro National Park has plenty to do besides the summit. These are the main options:
- Climb Mount Kilimanjaro:
Climb to the top of Africa’s highest peak. There are several routes, so climbers with different levels of experience can find one that suits them. - Day Hikes:
If the summit isn’t for you, the park has plenty of shorter hikes and walking trails. They take you through the different landscapes and habitats on the lower mountain. - Wildlife Viewing:
Kilimanjaro is not mainly a wildlife park. Still, the lower slopes are home to elephants, buffaloes, leopards and monkeys, among other animals. Keep an eye out as you walk. - Birdwatching:
Birdwatchers do well here, with over 250 bird species recorded in the park. Bring binoculars and look for them in the forest and the alpine meadows. - Cultural Tours:
Visit the villages around Kilimanjaro on a cultural tour and meet the Chagga people. You learn about their customs, food and crafts, and why the mountain matters so much to them. - Photography:
Kilimanjaro is a great subject for photographers. You have the snow-capped summit, the green rainforest and the wide savanna below, so there is always something worth a shot. - Nature Walks:
Join a guided nature walk to learn about the plants and animals of Kilimanjaro National Park. Your guide will name the plants, point out animal tracks and explain how the park’s ecology works.
We have spent a lot of time on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, so we know how to run a good hike. We have climbed the mountain in every season and know each route well. When you trek with a guide from Tanzania Tourism Safaris, you get that know-how. We watch how your group is doing, make sure everyone is well and drinking enough, and set a pace that works for you. We are also proud to pay our porters fairly and give them proper equipment, because the climbs depend on them.
Kilimanjaro might be the main reason for your trip, or just one part of a longer stay in Tanzania. Either way, reaching the summit is something you will remember for years. At the top of Africa’s highest peak you often stand above the clouds, and all you hear is the wind. We look forward to taking you there.
