Overview

This 14-day family safari and beach trip, planned by Tanzania Tourism Safaris, gives you the best of Tanzania in one go. The first week is all about wildlife in the big national parks: Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. You will see elephants under old baobab trees and lions out on the open plains. The trip runs from the foot of Mount Meru in Arusha to the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, with time to meet local people along the way.

After the safari you fly to Zanzibar. Spend some time in the narrow, winding lanes of Stone Town, full of old history, then relax on the Indian Ocean beaches. With the Big Five on safari, Swahili food on the island and a sunset trip on a dhow sailboat, this trip covers Tanzania from bush to beach.

Welcome to Tanzania. When you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), someone from Tanzania Tourism Safaris will meet you and drive you to your lodge in Arusha. In the evening your guide will sit down with you and go through the trip in detail.

  2. Day 2 Arusha – Arusha National Park Stay Planet Lodge – ArushaMeals Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast we drive to Arusha National Park. You start with a walking safari, led by a park ranger, to the Tululusia Waterfall, then go on a game drive around the Momella Lakes. The park changes quickly from forest to lakes to open ground. Look out for giraffes, buffaloes and black-and-white colobus monkeys. On clear days you can see Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru.

  3. Day 3 Arusha – Tarangire National Park Stay Burunge Tented Lodge – Tarangire AreaMeals Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

Today we head to Tarangire National Park, famous for its big elephant herds and huge baobab trees. The game drive starts as soon as we pass the gate. You may see lions, giraffes and zebras, and rarer animals such as the fringe-eared oryx.

  4. Day 4 Tarangire – Lake Manyara Stay Tloma Lodge – KaratuMeals Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

Next is Lake Manyara National Park, which sits at the bottom of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. The park goes from groundwater forest to the shores of an alkaline lake. Watch for flamingos, elephants, hippos and the tree-climbing lions. The night is in the green highlands of Karatu.

  5. Day 5 Karatu – Serengeti National Park Stay Sound of Silence – Central SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

Today you cross the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. On the way we stop at a Maasai village and pass the prehistoric Olduvai Gorge. We enter the wide plains of Serengeti National Park at Naabi Hill Gate and game drive all the way to camp.

  6. Day 6 Full Day in Serengeti National Park Stay Sound of Silence – Central SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

You have the whole day in the Serengeti, home of the Great Migration. Look for prides of lions, cheetahs hunting and, with luck, a leopard. Your guide plans the day to give you the best chance of the “Big Five” and plenty of other wildlife.

  7. Day 7 Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater – Karatu Stay Tloma Lodge – KaratuMeals Breakfast, Packed Lunch, Dinner

This morning we drive down into the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where wildlife is protected. On the crater floor you have a good chance of rhinos, lions and elephants, along with large herds of grazing animals. In the afternoon we drive back up and on to Karatu for the night.

  8. Day 8 Karatu – Arusha – Zanzibar Stay Dhow Palace Hotel – Stone TownMeals Breakfast, Lunch Box

After breakfast we drive you to Arusha Airport for the flight to Zanzibar Island. Look out of the window; the views are good. On arrival you transfer to your hotel in the old centre of Stone Town. The evening is free, and the busy Forodhani Gardens night market is a good place to start.

  9. Day 9 Stone Town Tour – Spice Farm – Beach Stay Next Paradise Boutique Resort – BeachfrontMeals Breakfast, Dinner

The morning starts with a guided walk around Stone Town, then a visit to a spice plantation, where you learn how Zanzibar became a world centre for the spice trade. Afterwards you transfer to the quieter beaches on the island’s northeast coast.
