Umbwe Route: the steepest and hardest Kilimanjaro climb

The Umbwe Route is the most direct way up Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the steepest and shortest trail to the summit. You gain height fast and get very little time to acclimatize.

It is not a route for casual trekkers, or for anyone who wants to “ease into” altitude. If you have real hiking experience, good fitness and a stubborn streak, Umbwe is a hard but rewarding way up the Roof of Africa.

What Is the Umbwe Route?

The Umbwe Route comes up Kilimanjaro from the south. It is very steep, above all in the first two days. You start in thick rainforest, climb quickly into the alpine zone, and join the Machame Route at Barranco Camp.

How it differs from the other routes:

  • Steepest ascent of all routes

  • Poor acclimatization profile, so not a good choice for beginners

  • Shortest trail to the top in terms of distance

  • Few other climbers, so the early days are quiet

  • A 6 or 7-day itinerary with little room for error

We don’t recommend this trail for first-timers or for anyone who struggles with altitude. If you are short on time and have hiked at elevation before, Umbwe is a challenge you will remember.
