Overview

This honeymoon is half bush, half beach, and the safari only goes one way. You start among the coffee farms of Arusha, drive out to the Ngorongoro Crater, cross the Serengeti to its far northern corner, then take a small plane to Zanzibar. There’s no backtracking and no road twice. The beach comes last, which is when most couples want it.

The safari part is five nights in luxury lodges and camps. You spend a full day on the crater floor, two nights in the central Serengeti and one night in a camp in the north, the area the wildebeest herds usually reach in the dry months of roughly July to October. Day 1 is an easy start: a coffee farm tour and a visit to a craft workshop near Arusha, where local artisans, many of them living with disabilities, turn recycled glass into jewelry and homeware.

After that you have four nights at an all-inclusive luxury resort on Zanzibar. Meals and drinks are covered, and you can do as much or as little as you like. Tanzania Tourism Safaris arranges a welcome of bubbly, fruit or flowers, a private breakfast and a lantern-lit dinner for the two of you.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 Coffee Trees and Glass Craft Near Arusha Stay Luxury hotel in ArushaMeals Dinner

One of our team meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and drives you to Arusha, under an hour away, where Mount Meru rises above the town. Once you’ve settled in, we visit a social-enterprise workshop where local artisans, many with disabilities, make glassware and beads from recycled glass. Next is a walk round a coffee farm. A guide shows you how the beans are grown, picked, dried and roasted, and you finish with a tasting.

  2. Day 2 Highlands Drive and a Full Day in the Crater Stay Luxury lodge in the highlands near KaratuMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast we leave Arusha and head west to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. You drive down into the crater, the collapsed cone of an ancient volcano that now shelters a lot of wildlife, and spend the day on its floor. Look out for black rhino, elephants with heavy tusks, lions and pink flamingos on the soda lake. A walk on the rim, sundowners or a wine tasting to end the day can be arranged at extra cost.

  3. Day 3 Across the Plains to a Serengeti Lodge Stay Luxury lodge in the central SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today the road runs on through the highlands and down onto the Serengeti plains, and you watch for game along the way. At your lodge, the staff help you plan your time in the park. You can split the days into a sunrise drive and a late-afternoon drive, or stay out all day with a picnic. Couples who want more can add a dawn balloon flight, a guided walk, a night drive where allowed, or a visit to a Maasai community, all at extra cost.

  4. Day 4 A Private Game Drive from Dawn to Dusk Stay Luxury lodge in the central SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After an early breakfast you spend the whole day out with your guide and vehicle. The central Serengeti is good for big cats: lions on the rocky kopjes, leopards in the trees along the rivers and cheetahs watching the open grass. Lunch is laid out somewhere with a good view of the savanna. Back at the lodge there’s time for a shower and a drink before dinner, and at night you’ll hear the bush all around you.

  5. Day 5 North to the Migration Country Stay Luxury camp in the northern SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today you travel north, game-driving through changing landscapes to a camp in the northern Serengeti. From about July to October, this is usually where the wildebeest herds graze, and they sometimes pass close to camp. In other months the north is quieter, but resident lions, elephants and buffalo live here all year. In the evening there’s a drink by the campfire and dinner under the stars, far from any town.

  6. Day 6 Morning Game Drive, Afternoon Flight to the Coast Stay All-inclusive luxury beach resort on ZanzibarMeals Breakfast, then all-inclusive

You go out early for one last game drive, then come back for a proper breakfast. Your guide takes you to the airstrip and says goodbye as you board a scheduled flight to Zanzibar. Out of the window you see the brown plains turn to green hills, then the Indian Ocean. On the island a driver meets you and takes you to your beach resort, where meals and drinks are now included.

  7. Day 7 Salt Water and Shade Stay All-inclusive luxury beach resort on ZanzibarMeals All-inclusive

You’ve had five early starts on safari, so today there’s no alarm. Take your time over breakfast, find two loungers under the palms and swim whenever it gets too hot. The water around Zanzibar is warm all year, and at low tide the shallows are good for long walks. Because everything is included, lunch and drinks come whenever you want them. End the day with a sunset drink on the sand.

  8. Day 8 Coral Gardens Beyond the Shore Stay All-inclusive luxury beach resort on ZanzibarMeals All-inclusive

Many of Zanzibar’s beaches are protected by coral reefs offshore, which keeps the water calm for swimming and snorkeling. Ask the resort about a snorkeling trip or a sail in a traditional dhow. You’ll see bright reef fish and, if you’re lucky, a turtle. If your resort has a spa, this is a good afternoon for a treatment for two. Dinner tonight could be the private lantern-lit meal that is part of your honeymoon touches.

  9. Day 9 Stone Town for an Afternoon, If You Wish Stay All-inclusive luxury beach resort on ZanzibarMeals All-inclusive

Your last full day is yours to use as you like. If you’re curious about the island’s history, an optional trip to Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, takes you through narrow lanes past carved wooden doors and busy markets. If you’d rather stay put, there’s no need to leave the resort at all: read, swim, sleep and have one more slow evening by the ocean. Either way, keep some time for packing before dinner.

  10. Day 10 Goodbye to the Island Meals Breakfast

Have a last breakfast and say goodbye to the resort staff. At the agreed time, a driver takes you to Zanzibar’s international airport for your flight home or onward. If your flight leaves late in the day, ask us before you travel about a late check-out so you can keep your room a little longer. Our team stays reachable until you are on your way.

Questions about this safari

When are the wildebeest in the northern Serengeti?

The herds usually reach the north from about July to October, though their timing changes from year to year with the rains. If you travel in those months, your night in the north puts you close to them. At other times, the north is quiet but still has resident wildlife, and we can suggest a different camp that suits your dates.

Why visit the crater first rather than last?

The crater lies between Arusha and the Serengeti, so seeing it on the way in lets the safari keep moving in one direction. You end at an airstrip in the Serengeti and fly straight to Zanzibar, which avoids a long drive back to Arusha and gives you more time at the beach.

How do we get from the Serengeti to Zanzibar?

A scheduled light aircraft flies from a Serengeti airstrip to Zanzibar, sometimes with a stop on the way. The flight is included. Small planes have strict baggage limits, so bring soft bags rather than hard suitcases. A driver meets you at Zanzibar’s airport and takes you to your resort.
