Overview

There are no long road transfers on this trip. You spend the first night on a coffee estate near Arusha. From there, small planes fly you into the Serengeti and between its camps, so you spend your days watching animals, not sitting on the highway. First come two nights in the central Serengeti, near the Seronera valley and the Moru Kopjes, an area known for big cats. Then a short flight north takes you to the Mara River for two nights in a seasonal camp set up for the migration.

In the Serengeti you stay in small, high-end tented camps. The staff look after you well, each tent has its own verandah, and meals are served in camp or out in the bush. Game drives are in open-sided 4×4 vehicles, so nothing blocks your view and you get good angles for photos. You can add a balloon flight over the central plains at dawn.

Tanzania Tourism Safaris books the flights, camps and guiding as one private package. Local drinks are included. On the last morning you fly from Kogatende to Arusha, or straight to Zanzibar if you are heading to the beach.

Day by day

  1. Day 1 Kilimanjaro Arrival and a Coffee Estate Stay Stay Luxury lodge on a working coffee estate near ArushaMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Your guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport, and it is roughly an hour’s drive to Arusha. Tonight you stay at a lodge among the coffee bushes of a working estate. It is a quiet spot to get over the long flight. Walk round the gardens, take your time over dinner and get a good night’s sleep. You fly to the Serengeti tomorrow, so there is no early start for a long drive.

  2. Day 2 Flight to Seronera and a First Game Drive Stay Small luxury tented camp in the central SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast you go to the airport for a flight of about 50 minutes to the Seronera airstrip. Your guide meets you there with an open-sided vehicle, and you start looking for animals on the way to camp. The migrating herds pass through this part of the park as they move north and south. Its rivers and kopjes also attract lions, leopards and cheetahs all year. Settle into your tent and watch the evening light on the plains from your verandah.

  3. Day 3 Seronera and the Moru Kopjes Stay Small luxury tented camp in the central SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Booked the balloon flight? You are picked up before dawn and float over the plains as the sun rises, then meet your guide for the rest of the day. If not, head out early to the Seronera valley and the granite outcrops of the Moru Kopjes. Lions like to lie on the warm rocks here, and leopards rest in the trees. You can take a picnic and stay out all day, or come back to camp for lunch and a lazy afternoon before the next drive.

  4. Day 4 Short Hop North to the Mara River Stay Seasonal luxury tented camp in the northern SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A flight of about 30 minutes takes you across the park to the northern Serengeti. Up here there are hills, woodland along the rivers and long views toward the Kenyan border. Your camp moves with the seasons to stay near the herds, so you are close to the river as soon as you land. In the afternoon you take a first drive toward the Mara. Back at camp there is a fire, dinner and, on a clear night, a lot of stars.

  5. Day 5 A Day at the Mara River Crossings Stay Seasonal luxury tented camp in the northern SerengetiMeals Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today is all about the river. You leave early and have breakfast out in the bush among the grazing herds. Your guide then picks a spot near the crossing points. The wildebeest bunch up on the banks, wait, and then jump in, past crocodiles and grunting hippos. Nobody can say when a crossing will happen, so bring patience. When the river is quiet, there are lions, elephants and lots of plains game to watch nearby.

  6. Day 6 Kogatende to Arusha or Zanzibar Meals Breakfast, Lunch

After breakfast you drive to the Kogatende airstrip. From here you fly back to Arusha, about an hour away, for your next stop or your flight home. Or you fly straight to Zanzibar if you are going on to the coast. Either way, you get one last look at the northern Serengeti from the air. Tell us your onward plans when you book, and we will match the flight to them.

Questions about this safari

When is the best time to book this fly-in safari?

The Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti usually happen between July and October, so that is when this route works best. Travelling at another time of year? We can swap the northern camp for one nearer to where the herds are likely to be on your dates.

How is this different from your 6-Day Fly-In Wildebeest Calving Safari?

Both trips fly you between high-end Serengeti camps. This one begins with a night on a coffee estate near Arusha and ends at the Mara River for the dry-season crossings. The calving safari flies you straight to the Serengeti on the day you arrive, and you spend three nights at Ndutu when the calves are born early in the year.

Can I end the safari on Zanzibar?

Yes. On the last morning you can fly from Kogatende straight to Zanzibar instead of Arusha, so it is easy to add a beach stay. The beach nights are not part of this package. Tell us how long you want on the island, and we will add them to your quote.
